Nothing at Ellis Reach Is What It Seems
Seventeen-year-old Elara Ellis survived the horrific car accident that killed her mother. After awakening from a year-long coma with only fractured memories of the tragedy, she returns to Ellis Reach, her billionaire fatherβs isolated coastal fortress on the South Shore of Massachusetts.
The sprawling estate is meant to be a sanctuary where Elara can quietly recover. Instead, its oppressive silence, constant surveillance, and carefully controlled perfection make it feel more like a prison.
Soon, Elaraβs senses begin to betray her. Shadows do not align. Objects inexplicably blur. The world slips in and out of focus. Her father insists these distorted perceptions are symptoms of trauma, the terrifying side effects of a broken mind struggling to heal.
Then she meets Julian Thorne.
With his frayed denim jacket, easy humor, and knowing amber eyes, Julian is the only person in Elaraβs tightly curated world who feels vibrant and undeniably real. He knows the hidden trails along the coastal bluffs. He listens when no one else will. And when Elaraβs anxiety threatens to pull her under, he anchors her to the earth.
There is just one problem.
According to the local archives, Julian died in a fiery explosion that occurred moments after the same accident that claimed her motherβs life.
As Elara searches for the truth about the mysterious boy on the cliffs, her past begins to unravel. She must decide whether Julian is a symptom of her breaking mind or a bridge to a truth her father has spent millions to bury.

Elara Meets Julian
And then I see him.
A boy is sitting on a lichen-covered rock a few yards away. Heβs wearing a denim jacket that looks authentically frayed. Itβs the first thing Iβve seen all day that actually looks old. In a world that feels increasingly polished and artificial, the worn threads of his collar stand out with a gritty, comforting realism.
The rock heβs perched on is at the tip of a dangerous overhang, and his boots dangle casually over a hundred-foot drop that descends straight into the churning surf. Heβs sketching in a notebook, his hand moving with a fluid, rhythmic grace that seems to completely defy the wind whipping around him.
I freeze. My pulse hammers in my throat, a frantic, rhythmic thrum. I donβt speak. Instead, I do exactly what Dr. Aris told me to do when I see something βextra.β I squeeze my eyes shut, count to five, and visualize the person dissolving into smoke.
One. You are an intrusive thought. Two. You are a chemical imbalance. Three...
βYou know, if you keep your eyes shut that close to the edge, this meeting is going to get real messy, real fast.β
The voice is crystal clear. It doesnβt sound like the muffled, underwater warble of my dreams or the distant, ringing hum of the house. Itβs crisp. It carries the resonance of the salt air.
My eyes snap open. Heβs still there, looking at me with a curiosity that feels almost tangible. He offers a grin that tugs hard toward the right, finding a home in the single, deep dimple that seems to catch his smile. Itβs a lopsided look, as unkempt and charming as his appearance.
βIβm having a βlapse,ββ I whisper, my hands shaking violently at my sides. βYouβre a βlapse.ββ
The boyβs expression shifts from playful to curious. He hops down from the ledge, moving with a lightness that makes me dizzy, and stands a cautious six feet away.
βIβve been called a lot of things,β he says. βA nuisance. A nerd. An underpaid intern. But a βlapseβ is a new one. Iβm Julian.β
He watches me intently, a breathless, hopeful anticipation radiating from him as his name hangs in the air.
βYou shouldnβt be here,β I say, my voice rising with a frantic edge. βNobody comes here. My brain... it likes to fill in the blanks with people when Iβm lonely. Thatβs what Dr. Aris said. Youβre just a manifestation of my social isolation.β
Julian doesnβt laugh. He looks at me with an intense frown that feels like a physical weight. Then, he shrugs his shoulders and smiles again, except his eyes still radiate sadness.
βIβm not a ghost, Elara,β he says, his voice dropping to a low, steady hum.
βWait.β I look at him, confused. βHow do you know my name?β
